Why, because I have a copy of Windows XP on my MacBook Pro. I have had a copy of Parallels Desktop for Mac for quite a while. However, I never took the time to install a copy of XP. Well, the new Coherence feature finally made me take the plunge. That and the fact that I got tired of using the Diablo II character editor on Kathy’s Gateway and having to transfer the hacked characters back to my Mac. Now I can edit the characters in my copy of XP and the folder the data is in is shared so there isn’t even a need to drag and drop.

I really don’t like the entire Windows experience (when I installed my XP pre SP 1 OS I had to endure four hours of upgrades to get it to SP2 with all the latest patches), but I need to run GroupWise (I’m pushing to have us look at something else) and my character editor and this makes it convenient. Performance is great and coherence makes you almost forget you are using Windows. I’d say that if you can’t wait to see what Leopard holds then snag a copy of Parallels.

Today I found a surprise in my RSS feeds. The blogging bundle for TextMate. It allows you to write and edit posts using the TextMate editor. This is a great thing since TextMate is hands down the best text editor available for OS X. It is also good because TextMate takes advantage of OS X’s built-in spell check. If you have OS X you should pony up the €39 for TextMate and then get the Blogging bundle from svn.

In the past couple of days there have been some very exciting developments for the display of photo galleries. I posted about Lightbox in this post a few months ago. Well, in the past few days, some people have made significant improvements. The first was Suckerfish HoverLightbox which combines Hoverbox by SonSpring and LightboxJS by Lokesh Dhakar to create a gallery where hovering on an image brings up a 2x version and clicking the image creates a floating full-size version above the active page. This solution requires Javascript and as such is not loved by all.

Enter a CSS only version by CSSPLAY. This is really cool, but you do not get the full-size image floating above the active page. This is because the Javascript in LightboxJS is what allowed the floating full-size image. If you can live without the floating full size image then this may be the gallery for you. I am going to play with both of these on some of the other sites I maintain.

There is also a new version of LightboxJS to try.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21 we had our first use of ProfCast. It was a great success. Amy Jo Stavnezer agreed to test the application during her Faculty at Large address. I was there a little ahead of time to hook the laptop up and make sure Amy Jo got started OK. There were no issues at all.

ProfCast allows one to capture the slides (it supports Keynote and PowerPoint) and audio of a presentation and keeps them in sync. To use the application requires OS X 10.4 and either presentation application. The only difference for the presenter is to start their presentation and then start ProfCast. When they are ready to present they press the Record button on ProfCast and the presentation starts and progresses like normal. At the end of the presentation ProfCast comes up and asks you to Publish the presentation as a Podcast. We canceled that and saved the session as an enhanced Podcast. This created an m4b file which was uploaded to the server.

If you view the video, you’ll notice the default size is a little small. Visitors can download the file and open it in QuickTime Player and choose to view it at Double size for a clearer picture. It is a little unclear as to what purpose we might use ProfCast in the classroom, but we will probably experiment with it for the remaining Faculty at Large events.

One of the things I’m responsible for and love doing is the i.t site. Right now it looks a lot like my static site. Maybe that’s becuse I used my static site as a template. The look is really just the old Wooster homepage with the code updated to XHTML 1.0 Transitional and styled with CSS. I made sure everything validates and that was pretty much it. It’s kind of boring. So Janet asked me to overhaul it and add some additional sections. I decided to try some of the CSS magic I’m learning from A List Apart. You can take a look at the proof of concept.

So what am I doing? First I’m using the three column layout from A List Apart. This layout has all three columns being the same height. Then I added CSS based tabs which I found at the Kalsey Consulting Group. The tabs aren’t overly styled but the design does have the nice advantage that the sublists show up under the main tabbed list. It still needs some work so if you have ideas let me know.

Today I set up some Mambo installations on my office computer. It was dead simple to install Mambo, not so simple to customize the look, and a little confusing in organization. The most puzzling thing for me is the apparent inability to link from one static content item to another static content item in an intuitive manner. I would like to be able to highlight text and use the Insert Link tool to accomplish this, but one doesn’t know the address of the other static content item. The user manual, of which there is little, does not give any indication that this is possible.

Maybe this is my first encounter with a Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0 way of thinking about things. I’m trying to replicate a static website in an age of dynamic content. A transition to Mambo will require a huge rewiring of people’s brains regarding how they think of their websites.

It appears that the issue of hit or miss access to individual blogs is an issue with our ISP, OarNET. Our systems people have contacted OarNET and told them how to fix the problem, thanks much. They hope to hear back today or tomorrow.

A quick explanation of what the problem is. Some of you may know that all computers on the internet are idendified by a set of 12 numbers broken into groups of three. When you type www.wooster.edu into a browser that name needs to be converted to a number. This is what a DNS does. Herein lies the problem. All of the blogs are on the same machine so we need all the username.blogs.wooster.edu to resolve (be associated with) to the same number. This is accomplished by using what is called a wildcard DNS entery. It seems that the wildcard is not being handled properly by OarNET or that they are not doing a zone transfer for the domain blogs.wooster.edu. Once this is fixed everything should be super.

This evening my RSS reader had a nice surprise in it from ifelse. I checked out the page discussing lightbox and decided to install it on my personal blog. It went pretty smoothly except for the loading image. I’d like to put it on this site but until I figure out how to allow the loading image to be in the theme directory, I don’t think I can.

I really like the fact that the image is placed over the current page and then disappears when clicked on again. It is so much more convenient than being taken to a new page and then having to go back.

If you decide to check out the installation on my personal blog, be aware of the fact that the images are huge. They are huge so that family members can download them to make prints up to 8 by 10.

After reading A List Apart, I decided to try and redo my static site’s index page and get the same look as the original but without all the tables. After a few hours and some frustration with nesting, I now have a tableless index page. To compare you can visit the original index here and the new index here. It was a very interesting exercise and I learned a lot about CSS by doing it. I highly recommend A List Apart for anyone designing content for the Web.
